Roundhouse goes full circle
The Roundhouse Theatre, where The Doors played their one and only UK gig, is set to make it’s own comeback. Despite in its day hosting performances by Pink Floyd, Jimi Hendrix, The Ramones and the Rolling Stones, by the 1980s the former railway shed had fallen into disrepair. Following £30million investment in its renovation, next week it will open its doors once again to music fans, nostalgia lovers and new audiences alike.
Revolutionary in its day, the Roundhouse Theatre was originally constructed by the London and Birmingham Railway as a shed where trains could be turned on a revolving platform to run back up to Birmingham. Soon as larger trains were in use, it was left redundant and from 1869 was a warehouse for Gilbey’s Gin. But it is best known as the Roundhouse Theartre following Arnold Wesker, the playwright, launch of the Centre 42 arts complex in the 1960’s.
It’s life really has gone full circle. Having closed in 1983, Torquil Norman stepped in and bought the building in 1996. Following years of hard work coupled with the support from English Heritage and the Heritage Lottery fund, on Monday the venue opens again with a production of Fuerzbruta by Argentinean theatre company De La Guarda.
