Pint of Beer becomes an Icon of England! What does this say about the English, when a glass of beer is one of the enduring icons of our society? Icons of England have revealed their latest list of 20 icons based on votes from the general public. A pint of beer takes up its place alongside Sherlock Holmes, The Bobby (policeman), Monty Python, Robin Hood, The Archers (a popular radio show), the Mini and Rugby.
As depressing as it is to think that an alcoholic drink in a unique quantity just short of a half litre can define a nation, you has to admit that they’re not wrong. There is something enduring about a pint, something homely. It is no surprise that men and women hold it close to them like an old friend. So much so that when you are on the continent and beer is served in what amounts to a wine glass, you always have a feeling of disappointment - it’s just not the same, it’s just not England, and it’s certainly not cricket!
