Excuse the vanity but Answer English has been acknowledged as organising the best social events in town! Yes according to Transitions Abroad website our Social Events make it into their Top Ten things to do in London.
In the Evening: Best Social Event
Answer English language nights
Answer English language service is quite a new and small company, based in London, but they’ve come a long way in a short time. Originally catering to foreign students arriving in London and providing them with the full package of finding schools, accommodation and more, since last autumn the company has been branching out into informed social evenings that mix networking and language learning. These events take place several times a month and the emphasis is on meeting new people while improving your languages as well. So far there are Spanish, French, Italian and Mandarin nights, bringing together a wide variety of nationalities in centrally located London bars, e.g. Gerrard Street’s The Exchange Bar in the heart of London’s Chinatown. The choice of bar can’t be a coincidence – the evenings are firmly based around an exchange taking place, so that those who would like to improve their English also get a chance to practice with native speakers. Managing director James Herbertson says “I found that for many who come to the UK, it can be surprisingly difficult to meet and practice English with native speakers.” He also found that many English speakers, both British and American, wanted to improve other languages and the social evenings have attracted a fair share of expats. The company has plans for German and Japanese evenings and there’s even been calls for Russian, Hungarian and Polish.

We recently said goodbye to JiaJun our long serving accounts & administration man mountain. Here are his reflections on his time in London:
It was very difficult for me when I came to London in February because I knew nothing about London which means this was my first time in London. But with the help of my host family, I eventually knew how to use Oyster card, how to get to work and where I could find a good restaurant to eat etc. One thing I don’t like about London is the bus because it has no automatic telling machine inside the bus which means you have to know the road very well no matter where you are going. So, foreigners find it very difficult to take a bus and I got lost on the bus several times, so I prefer London Underground transportation: not only fast, but also easy to know where you are. In conclusion, I like London Tube and hate bus!
During the 5 months stay in London, I visited so many places that I could not remember all of them, some very impressive places I need to tell everybody are: The British Museum, National Gallery, Science Museum, Regent Park, Hyde Park, Green Park, Queen’s Park, Highgate Park, Westerminster Abbey, Tate Britain, London Aquarium, Imperial War Museum and London Zoo etc.
As you all know, London is an international city, this lead to people in London could come from everywhere in the world; so you will never feel alone! One of the reasons I love London is that I can make many friends in this fantastic city: from the first month until the last month, new friends were made and old friends went back to the country they belong to (I was so happy to have a new friend, but feel very sad when my friends had to go back to their home country because they came to London to study English).
Working for Answer English
Now let’s talk about working for Answer English which is the most important part why I am here. Let’s start from the very beginning: during the first month I worked with Answer English, I did not know anything about how a real company works, so I had many difficulties to work. Mr. James Herbertson who is the Managing Director of this company kindly taught me everything little by little, after several weeks, I had already had the ability to help with running of Answer English, at the same time, I could always have the opportunity to practice my English and whenever I made a mistake, James will correct it immediate which I really appreciated.
During the second, third and fourth month of my stay with Answer English, everything seems normal and I always got the new responsibilities to work with. James was really helpful during this period and I learned a lot from him about how a real business works. In the last month of my stay, I felt very sad: on the first hand, my stomach was not feeling well; James kindly let me to go home and have a rest, so I bought some medicine which made me feel much better!
On the other hand, I have to go back to the Netherlands soon because many things were waiting for me to solve and two reports to hand in before the closure of my University! One thing I am sure is that I am going back to London in the near future because I love London more and more!
Tuesday night we headed up to Walthamstow for a Dogs Night. A very English experience watching Dogs run round in a circle… For more photos go to our Past Events Gallery
