February 2008 English Class

January 26, 2008 at 5:34 pm · Filed under Answer English Blog, Learning English · Posted by James

Our February English Class is out.

In this month’s English class you can enjoy an article on my all time favourite British Comedy Fawlty Towers. My favourite language learning joke has to be when Basil Fawlty is giving instructions to Manuel (the helpless waiter):

Basil Fawlty: Ah, Manuel? There is too much butter on those trays.
Manuel: Que?
Basil Fawlty: [speaking slowly] There is too much butter on those trays.
Manuel: Ah, no senor. No “on those trays”…
[counting the trays]
Manuel: “uno, dos, tres”.

The English class full content includes:

Fun Jokes to Match
Story Time Joke: Letter to an ex
Topic of the Month: Fawlty Towers
Idiom of the Month: Can of Worms
Phrasal verb: Break Down
News Article (Intermediate level): Eddie Anguish
News Article (Advanced level): Green Church
Film Review: Sicko

Things to do in London in February

January 26, 2008 at 2:01 pm · Filed under Answer English Blog, Learning English, London Life · Posted by James

If you put on a warm coat, then in February, you will be spoilt for choice in London. You can start with Shrove Tuesday (5 Feb), which we British celebrate by cooking pancakes and then running with them, throwing them in the air and catching them in the frying pan. For more details of the main events in London go to View London, they are great fun to watch.

If you can get up early enough (it starts at 10.00) then you can witness a classic piece of English culture. For us, it is important to be able to laugh at yourself, so we expect our public figures to be prepared to do crazy things, including Pancake Races. So, the Members of the Parliament, Lords and Ladies race for charity. About.com has the details.

You must not miss the Chinese New Year celebrations on Sun 10 Feb, which have spectacular parades and a festival in Trafalgar Square. The parade starts at 11.00 and includes Dragon dancers and many floats. The festival starts at 12.00. There is a full program through to 18.00, including examples of Beijing and Shanghai opera and the essential Lion dances to keep evil spirits away.

Here’s a different idea – visit Hampton Court Palace on Thurs 7 Feb. The Palace has played a major role in British history for over 500 years. It is very beautiful. There is also the famous Hampton Court Maze – you can find the way in, but leave plenty of time to find the way out! Then, stay on in the evening for a lecture and event - History of Chocolate, from bean to bar

You will know that Thurs 14 Feb is Valentine’s Day, when you can declare your true love. You may not know that on Leap Year’s Day (Fri 29 Feb), it is an English tradition that ladies can propose to their men!! If you do this, then we wish you success.  James is helping to organise a singles night in London for his charity Zimbabwe Rural Schools Development Programme: ZRSDP.  The evening is on the 8 February and includes dating games,  real live DJ and lots of glam single people!  For more information: Singles Night.

And finally if the February weather makes you want to stay indoors, then the world-class Tutankhamun Exhibition at the O2 or First Emperor: China’s Terracotta Army at the British Museum are very good choices. They are joined by “From Russia: French and Russian Master Paintings 1870–1925 from Moscow and St Petersburg” at the Royal Academy in Piccadilly. Most of the 120+ paintings on show have not left Russia since 1917 – so this promises to be a truly great exhibition.

Whatever you choose to do in London - enjoy!
