Looking ahead to February

January 9, 2008 at 12:58 am · Filed under Answer English Blog, Learning English, London Life · Posted by James

If you are visiting London in February, then these are events you can look forward to:

  • Tues 5 Feb – Shrove Tuesday – see Pancake Races, which started over 500 years ago, and is very typical of English culture.
  • Thur 7 Feb – History of Chocolate Exhibition – at Hampton Court, Surrey so you can taste the sweetmeats and view one of the most important (and beautiful) palaces in English history and learn of the role it played.
  • Sun 10 Feb - Chinese New Year – this is celebrated around Chinatown in Central london - you will see dragon & lion dances and firework displays.
  • Thur 14 Feb – Valentine’s Day - need I say more!!
  • Wed 20 to Sun 24 Feb – London Fashion Week - where the best designers showcase their work.
  • Fri 29 Feb – Leap Year’s Day - on which day, in English culture, the ladies can propose to their men!!

More detail on these at the beginning of February.

What’s happening in London in January

January 8, 2008 at 9:42 pm · Filed under Answer English Blog, Learning English, London Life · Posted by James

If you still need to blow the “post Christmas” cobwebs away, then try Ice Skating at the Natural History Museum until Sunday 20 or Somerset House until Sunday 27. You’ll need to book, as it’s very popular!

But if outside is too cold for you, then go to the Tutankhamen Exhibition at the O2 or see First Emperor: China’s Terracotta Army at the British Museum. These both demonstrate the power of London to attract world class exhibitions. This is the first time that Terracotta Warriors have been allowed outside China in such numbers. The same was true of the Tutankhamen exhibition, when it came to London in the 1970’s it was the first exhibition to attract over 100,000 visitors. We recommend that you book today to be sure of a ticket!

Alternatively if you are more of an art fan, see the Pop Art portraits at the National Portrait Gallery in Charing Cross Road (until 20 January). In addition to the Pop Art showing, this gallery is packed with portraits of famous people from all over the world. It’s well worth a visit.

Whatever you chose to do in London, enjoy!

January 2, 2008 at 7:43 pm · Filed under Answer English Blog, London Life · Posted by James

The latest weather forecast for tomorrow, Thursday 3rd January is for snow! We don’t have snow very often in London, so this is potentially exciting for us.

If it does snow, head for PRIMROSE HILL, LONDON NW3 (just North of Regent’s Park) and you will find children of all ages on toboggans and sledges having fun!

Get there early though…………snow doesn’t last very long in London…………….
