Jiajun heads down to the Tate Modern.

My friend and I visited part of the Tate Gallery network in Britain – Tate Britain recently. The other three are Tate Modern, Tate Liverpool and Tate St lves. Tate Britain was opened on 21 July 1897 as the National Gallery of British Art.

The front building really impressed me – old style, but you never feel it old. Tate Britain provides a restaurant and a café, as well as a Friends room, open only to members of the Tate. To become a member you need to pay an annual membership fee which allows you to enter Tate Britain at any time of the year and use the Friends room.

On the first Friday of every month, with half - price admission to special exhibitions, live music and performance art. Tate Britain and Tate Modern are connected by a high speed boat along the River Thames.

Tate Britain is the national gallery of British art from 1500 to present day. Some of the highlights of the Tate collection of British art include portraiture from the age of Queen Elizabeth I; of the work of William Hogarth, sometimes called the father of English painting; of the eighteenth-century portraitists Gainsborough and Reynolds; of the animal painter George Stubbs; of the artists of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood who revolutionised British art in the nineteenth century etc. There are also some very latest contemporary art is presented through the Art Now programme and the annual Turner Prize exhibition.

Why not go there yourself and have a real experience of British art, you might find you are also an art lover!

When Chinese is translated into English, it often ends in Chinglish.

In The Sun this week they told us of “Thousands of dodgy translations are being scrapped in Beijing in the run-up to this summer’s Olympic Games in the Chinese capital.”

Each year Oxford and Cambridge Universities compete in a Boat Race. This year it is on Saturday 29 March. This is a chance for those on an English Course to learn about British Culture. 2008 is the 154th race. Watching it is FREE. There are many places to see the race between the start (by Putney bridge) and the finish at Mortlake. You can cheer on the crews, but arrive early as it will be crowded, especially if the sun is shining!
