ZRSDP pub quiz on Thursday 6th November

October 8, 2008 at 3:48 pm · Filed under Answer English Blog, London Life · Posted by James

You will be delighted to know that there will be the annual ZRSDP pub quiz on Thursday 6th November. For those of you who haven’t been along to one of these events before, ZRSDP stands for the Zimbabwe Rural Schools Development Programme. They raise money for schools to build much needed classroom blocks and kit them out.

They are revisiting The Counting House. This was a great venue for them two years ago and those who were there will remember dancing late into the night to the booby prize CD singles from the 1990’s.

Details are:
*       The Counting House - 50 Cornhill EC3V 3PD
*       http://www.beerintheevening.com/pubs/s/35/3534/Counting_House/Bank
*       Thursday 6th November - 6.15pm onwards (quiz to start at 7pm).
*       £5 each to enter. Max team size is six.
*       Traditional prizes: Champagne and wine for the top teams - CD singles and other booby prizes for the latterly placed teams.
Look forward to seeing you there!

Congratulations: IELTS result

October 7, 2008 at 7:05 pm · Filed under Answer English Blog, Learning English, London Life · Posted by James

Our congratulations go out to Alberto who attended our London - West End IELTS preparation course this summer.  Alberto recently took the IELTS exam and achieved a whopping 7.5 score.

To those not familiar with the IELTS scoring system, typically to go to University in the UK you need 5.5 to 6.5 (7.0 or higher to go to Oxford or Cambridge).  So a 7.5 score is a fantastic achievement.

Well done to Alberto!

La mia Londra: consigli per vivere la capitale VILLAGGI- My London: tips to enjoy the life of the Capital VILLAGES (by Annalisa)

LONDRA PANORAMI & VILLAGGI

LONDON VILLAGES AND VIEWS

One of the most popular destinations for a sunny day away from the chaos of the big city is Greenwich, with the Royal Naval College and the Observatory. From here you have a really beautiful view of London and the boat from Westminster  offers you a great opportunity to enjoy the most interesting monuments of the capital from the river Thames. Without moving away from London, you can find a village atmosphere with uncontaminated nature also in Richmond.

Alternatively, in the north of London there is the elegant Primrose Hill, at the end of Regent’s Park, from where you have an enjoyable view of the city. Even further north, Hampstead Village is the perfect place for a cup of tea with a slice of delicious cake in a picturesque environment and then you can power up to the ever green Hampstead Heath.  Wonderful view from Parliament Hill.

Tip: If you have already been to these places or you are looking for a different way of visiting the capital, avoiding the traffic, Regent’s Canal offers you a quiet path where you can walk, cycle or skate discovering the north of London. Alongside the canal you will go from Paddington, through Little Venice and the London Zoo, towards Camden Town, with its famous Lock, then Islington and on to Docklands.

We have had our first Answer English wedding!  James Adkin who many of you will remember from organising both our Language Learning Evenings and Walking Tours has just got married to Mireya.  They met at one of our Spanish - English nights and never looked back, clearly taking ‘intercambio’ to new levels.

James and Mireya wedding

James Herbertson from Answer English was there to witness the happy moment in Chinauta, Colombia.  We wish them the best of luck, now and in the future!

La mia Londra: consigli per vivere la capitale ARTE - My London: tips to enjoy the life of the Capital ART (by Annalisa)

LONDRA MODA & DESIGN

LONDON FASHION & DESIGN
Areas known for trendy shopping in the Capital are Myfair, South Kensigton and Chelsea, but we should also add the rebirth of Hackney, with its many young designers retails and fashion shops.
Tip: If you like fashion and design and you enjoy going shopping in the center or just watching boutiques and galleries, the ‘Dover Street Market’ in Mayfair (not affordable for everyone!) is worth a visit.

LONDON ART
We all know that most of the museums in London are free, small galleries are opening in every corner and architects offer us an open air museum, so, there are loads of occasions for gorging oneself on good art.
Tip: For all photography lovers October is a heaven, with pictures from hundreds photographers exhibited in many East London venues in celebration of the Photomonth.
